도넛(doughnuts)이란 단어의 기원은 다음과 같다. 1차 대전 중 두 사람의 구세군 봉사원이 프랑스에 주둔하고 있던 보병(doughboys)들의 사기를 북돋아 주기 위해 빵을 구워주었다. 그런데 보병들이 이 빵을 ‘무척 좋아해서(were ‘nuts’ about)’ 그렇게 이름붙인 것이라는 설이 있다. 가운데 난 구멍은 빵이 완전히 구워지게 하기 위해서 냈다는 설이 있다.
